Belluschi House Groundbreaking
The groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the historic Belluschi House was held on the Marylhurst campus September 11, 2012.
A small but historically significant home designed by noted Portland architect Pietro Belluschi will come to the Marylhurst University campus in 2012. Belluschi designed the 911-square-foot home in 1951 for Arthur and Lucy Griffith of Lake Oswego. Prior to its dismantling, it was believed to be one of only a few Belluschi-designed residences still standing unaltered, and the only one of its kind in Lake Oswego, Oregon. The house – now in 2,000 pieces, all numbered and measured – sits in a 48-foot storage container awaiting reconstruction on the Marylhurst campus. The Belluschi Pavilion will provide educational opportunities for Marylhurst students and the architectural community, and will be a resource for the community at large.
About Pietro Belluschi
The Italian-born Belluschi was involved in the design of an estimated 1,000 buildings
over his 50-year career, including the Portland Art Museum; the Juilliard School of
Music and Pan Am Building, both in New York City; and St. Mary's Cathedral in San
Francisco. He is widely known as the creator of the Northwest style of architecture.
His homes were constructed to take advantage of their natural surroundings and available
light.
