Historic Belluschi House Opens on Marylhurst Campus

After more than a year of painstaking reconstruction, the small but historically significant home designed by noted Portland architect Pietro Belluschi and donated to Marylhurst University will open late this month. Public tours of the home will be offered Saturday, September 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, September 29 from noon to 3 p.m.

Marylhurst Receives Record $1.25 Million Grant

Marylhurst Brings H.M.S. Pinafore to Campus

Marylhurst University's Department of Music will present two performances of H.M.S. Pinafore on campus June 7 and 9, 7:30 p.m. Special guest artist Alistair Donkin of England, one of the world's foremost Gilbert & Sullivan interpreters, will serve as stage director and narrator for the two performances. Justin Smith, Marylhurst's director of choral activities, conducts.

2013 Marylhurst Graduating Class: A Family Affair

Adam and his mother, Amy Webber, will both complete their bachelor's degrees in English literature and writing at Marylhurst University this June. And his dad, Mark Webber, isn't far behind; he's scheduled to complete his communications bachelor's degree in December. Adam and Amy are among more than 540 bachelor's and master's degree candidates who will be honored at Marylhurst's 119th commencement, scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at the Oregon Convention Center. Amy will be one of three graduates speaking during the commencement ceremony.

This spring, The Art Gym at Marylhurst University will present two exhibitions that address incarceration -- The Last Supper: 500 Plates by Julie Green and The Prison Industrial Complex by Buddy Bunting. The exhibitions open to the public on Tuesday, April 16, continuing through Friday, May 17. On Sunday, April 21, Green and Bunting will give a gallery talk in The Art Gym at 2 p.m. followed by a reception for the artists from 3 to 5 p.m. All are welcome. Admission and parking are free.

Shakespeare This Summer in the Lajos Balogh Performance Shell

Shakespeare returns to Summer on the Green at Marylhurst University with three outdoor shows in the Lajos Balogh Performance Shell. The series, in its third year, includes a free play once a month this summer guaranteed to entertain audiences with drama, tragedy and lively merrymaking. "Hamlet" and "Twelfth Night" will be performed by Shakespeare in the Parks program of the Portland Actors Ensemble. "As You Like It" will be performed by the Original Practice Shakespeare Festival in the manner Shakespeare's own actors did at Globe Theater.

Dr. Jan Dabrowski has been elevated to dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Debrah Bokowski was named dean of the School of Graduate Studies. The City of Lake Oswego and Marylhurst University will host a talk by James Roddey, an earthquake expert from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI), on May 11 at Marylhurst. He will speak about the similarities between the March 11 earthquake in Japan and a potential Cascadia subduction zone earthquake; the likelihood of a catastrophic earthquake in the Pacific Northwest; and how an earthquake would affect Oregon's roads and bridges.

Founder of Africa Bridge to Speak at Marylhurst University

Africa Bridge Founder Barry Childs will speak at Marylhurst University about how micro banking has assisted vulnerable children and their families in Tanzania on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. For more than a decade, Africa Bridge has helped set up 28 income-generating farming cooperatives in 16 villages in Southwest Tanzania. During this time, Africa Bridge has also built classrooms and medical clinics, provided agricultural training and improved the lives of more than 3,500 children, their families and their village communities.

Two new exhibitions will open at The Art Gym Sunday, April 3, with a reception and performances from 3 to 6 p.m. Both exhibitions continue through Sunday, May 15. "Dance: before, after,during" opens in the gallery's main space and presents preparatory materials, documentation and performances by four Portland-based choreographers -- Linda Austin, Susan Banyas, Tahni Holt and Linda K. Johnson. "Past Moves: Selected Archival Footage of Dance Performance in the 1970s and 1980s" focuses on documentation of the work of the Portland Dance Theater and the companies that grew out of it. Volunteers Paint Labyrinth at Marylhurst University

Students and community members recently painted an outdoor labyrinth on the Marylhurst University campus in the parking lot below Clark Commons. The painting of the labyrinth on Saturday, July 18 was a community event by a volunteer crew of Marylhurst students, faculty, staff, alumni and Lake Oswego residents. The labyrinth is free and open to the public, seven days a week during campus open hours. Everyone is invited and encouraged to walk it.

Green Means Growth with a New Online MBA in Sustainable Business

Marylhurst University will expand its graduate program this summer and offer a new online MBA in sustainable business to meet a growing need in one of the few industries that is adding, not cutting jobs, thanks in part to the 2009 federal stimulus bill. Concentrations within the new degree program will address the most pertinent sustainability topics: renewable energy, green development and public policy. Inaugural classes in the new program begin June 22, and enrollment is underway.

Oregon Film Luminaries to Kick Off Sesquicentennial Film Festival

Filmmakers James Ivory and Gus Van Sant and screenwriter Mike Rich will open the Oregon Sesquicentennial Film Festival at Marylhurst on Friday, May 1 with a special event at the Mission Theater at 1624 NW Glisan in Portland. Film festival activities will continue through May 10 on the Marylhurst University campus on Highway 43 one mile south of Lake Oswego.
