Marylhurst University Appoints Music Department Chair

John Paul, D. Mus., has been appointed Chair of Marylhurst University's Music Department after teaching in the program for a year. He is the recipient of the Joseph Naumes Endowed Chair in Music.

Before joining the Marylhurst faculty, Paul was as an associate instructor at the Indiana University School of Music. He was also guest composer at the Institute for Psycho-acoustics and Electronic Music in Belgium where he created works for Belgian National Radio. He has participated in the Ernest Bloch Composers Symposium in Newport (Ore.) as well as music festivals in Bourges (France), Buffalo (N.Y.) and Bowling Green (Ohio).

Paul worked in the video game industry as a manager who trained staff composers and software engineers, and as a composer. His composition titles include: Gauntlet Legends, Maximum Force, and Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. As a violinist, he has performed with the Austin Symphony and has taught in string preparatory programs in Austin and Bloomington.

He holds a Doctor of Music in Composition from Indiana University where he also completed his Master of Music in Composition. His Bachelor of Music in Theory/Composition is from the University of Texas at Austin.
