Marylhurst University Expands Popular Green MBA Program

For Release: June 08, 2010

Just a year after introducing a new MBA in sustainable business for online students, Marylhurst University is now launching a campus-based version of this highly successful program for students who prefer to take classes in person.

The green MBA will launch on the Lake Oswego-based campus in fall 2010. In this accelerated program, students will progress through the curriculum by taking a course at a time, one night a week for five weeks. Students will study with a cohort of their peers, and complete the program in 18 months.

The online version of the program, which debuted in summer 2009, already has attracted more than 100 students.

"Sustainability is becoming far more than a buzzword in the business world," said Alain Gracianette, chair of the Marylhurst MBA program. "Learning how to shepherd the use of resources is becoming an integral part of every company's operations. And business leaders are becoming much more serious about sustainability not just because it's good for the planet, but because it makes good business sense."

Marylhurst collaborated with industry leaders to create a relevant and compelling graduate business curriculum supporting sustainable business initiatives. Students can choose from concentrations in renewable energy and green development. The program is unique in that each course in the 48-credit program incorporates important issues and concepts associated with sustainable business management – the interconnection of economic, environmental and human social issues – are woven into every class.

"Our small, seminar-style classes provide a strong grounding in ethics, teamwork and communication to students preparing to become sustainability leaders in today's fast-paced global marketplace," Gracianette added. "We have created a rigorous and relevant program that allows students to begin applying their learning immediately, and to support their employers, employees and coworkers in incorporating sustainability into all aspects of running a business."

Marylhurst also offers an MBA with a concentration in sustainable business that can be completed both on campus and online. Other concentrations – in general management, finance, health care management, marketing, organizational behavior, non-profit management and real estate – are available as well. The university has the highest combined on-campus and online enrollment of any MBA program in Oregon.
