For Release: October 13, 2011
Marylhurst University will kick off the World Voices concert series this fall with a performance by Moira Smiley & VOCO, an ensemble of extraordinary musicians who share a passion for spreading powerful, emotional music driven by lush four-part vocal harmony. Their visionary blend of voices redefines harmony singing with the power and physicality of folksong, the avant-garde fearlessness of Béla Bartók and the delicious, vaudevillian accompaniment of cello, banjo, accordion and body percussion.
VOCO performs with the energy of street singing, improvisation and the wilder side of harmony and rhythm. Moira Smiley's original songs are often emotional, playful dialogues with sorrow, cynicism and loss. Together they are somewhere between the wild precision of an Eastern European dance song, the rich rhythm of a South African mbira tune and the plaintive improvisation of an Appalachian or African-American spiritual.
