The World Photography Organization announced that Jordan VanSise, a 24-year-old Marylhurst University sophomore who served seven months as a Marine in Iraq, beat all other U.S. college photographers and will compete as one of the 10 finalists at the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Student Focus competition.
All finalists, along with their instructors, will be flown to London to attend the exhibition and gala where the winner will be announced on April 30. The winner will receive about $60,000 worth of Sony photographic equipment for his or her university.
The finalists are:
Argentina - Nadia Navarro, Al Aire
Bangladesh - Rahul Talukder, Pathshala South Asia Media Institute
China - Li Dandan, Nanjing University of the Arts
Denmark - Tor Birk Trads, Danish School of Media
New Zealand - Chloe Riddell, University of Auckland
Romania - Sebastian Vacariuc, Babes-Bolyai University
South Africa - Russell Bruns, Rhodes University
South Africa - Tara Mette, Stellenbosch Academy
United Kingdom - Scarlet Evans, Central St Martins
USA - Jordan VanSise, Marylhurst University
VanSise originally created his winning image for a class assignment on self portraits. "I thought of the different 'versions' of myself that I wanted to depict," he said in a statement released by Marylhurst. "I set my camera on a tripod and framed it how I wanted. Then I changed into different outfits and changed my spot on the couch, as well as making a variety of gestures. Afterwards I chose the shots I liked and put them together to make the final image."
VanSise, who grew up in Portland and graduated from Clackamas High in 2007, is on track to earn his bachelor of fine arts in 2016 with a concentration in photography. He plans to do his thesis on veterans returning to society.
"It's exciting to have Jordan selected as a Student Focus finalist," said Rich Rollins, associate faculty at Marylhurst University. "He is a strong, sensitive and enthusiastic image maker who enlivens any classroom he is in with his eagerness to learn and his unfettered curiosity."
