Paul Sutinen Featured in Nine@25

Paul Sutinen, director of art programs and department co-chair, is among the artists exhibiting work at Nine Gallery's 25th anniversary exhibition through September 30, 2012.

The gallery is housed within Blue Sky Gallery at 122 NW 8th Avenue in Portland. Hours are Tuesday – Sunday, 12 noon to 5 p.m.

Excerpt from an essay by Maria T.D. Inocencio in the Nine@25 catalog.

Since 1987, Nine members and guest artists have expressed their ideas through performance, installation, sculpture, photography and a wide range of other media. The work has been subtle, quiet, loud, irreverent, expansive, political, conceptual, formal and sometimes downright perplexing, but always inviting: inviting the audience to participate in a dialog about visual art and human experience.

Current collective memory believes the original nine members were: Paul Sutinen, Chris Rauschenberg, Gary Boswell, Tyrell Sweetman, Jerry Mayer, Jeremy Kassen, John Weber, Laura Wittels and Lynda Barry.

In the 25 years that Nine has stayed together, Portland and its art world has expanded. Yet, little has changed in the basic structure of Nine. This anti-bureaucratic non-organization continues to operate with a minimum of hierarchy and hassle.

Without concern for interference, or any need to justify their statements, Nine artists are still trying to invent new ways to touch our senses and our minds, challenging notions about our physical and intellectual worlds. Of the eleven current members, seven have been with the gallery for at least 17 years, and four of those were among the original nine. All this time, they have kept up a conversation with a receptive and willing audience, through the realities and inconsistencies of life, and in spite of all the obstacles that can get in the way of making work. They have persisted in their commitment to art and to each other, and it is that commitment that has allowed this collaboration to last a quarter of a century.

Current members: Gary Boswell, Christine Clark, Ellen George, Maria T.D. Inocencio, Jerry Mayer, Kim Ray, Christopher Rauschenberg, Stephanie Speight, Paul Sutinen, Bill Will and Renee Zangara.

Past Members: Lynda Barry, Michael Bowley, Carolyn King, Jeremy Kassen, Mary Catherine Lamb, Cynthia Lahti, Tyrell Sweetman, Greg Ware, John Weber, Sarah Whitely and Laura Wittels.
