Faculty Receive Innovation Grants
Marylhurst faculty received "excellence and innovation" grants supporting work in business, interior design, art, sustainability and music therapy.
Music alum Thara Memory won a 2013 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists with vocalist Esperanza Spalding.
Memory has mentored Spalding since she was enrolled in Memory's American Music Program, educating middle- and high-school students in the art of American jazz music.
The Grammy was awarded for the song City of Roses, which also features Memory's students in the American Music Program's Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra.
In the recent television special Masters of Jazz: The Next Generation on OPB's Oregon Art Beat, Memory said:
"My job in life is just to teach people the way I was taught, to give them what I was given. You can't keep it unless you give it away."
Thara Memory earned a BA in music, conducting and composition, at Marylhurst University. Learn more about him and his American Music Program at TharaMemory.com.
