Lisa Jo Frech Interviewed by Kosovo JournalistsMarylhurst science instructor Lisa Jo Frech was invited by the U.S. State Department to confer with environmental journalists from Kosovo. The journalists visited several cities in the United States to explore how citizens of Kosovo might begin a movement towards environmental protection and sustainability. Frech met with the Kosovo journalists and a State Department representative at Marylhurst University on April 29. In addition to the tragic loss of lives and property, the Balkan conflict also resulted in a reduced sense of civic responsibility. Some in Kosovo are disposing of trash in the nearest empty lot. In addition to urban concerns, Kosovo's picturesque mountains and lakesides are strewn with litter and the rivers are polluted with debris and industrial runoff. State Department officials in Kosovo believe many of these environmental issues can be successfully addressed by the citizenry themselves if given the right impetus. Kosovo Public TV, with the help of the United States, is creating a program that will have a special emphasis on individual and community responsibility for the environment. The journalists are particularly interested in American success stories where environmental degradation has been curbed and reversed. Lisa Jo Frech has spent the last 20 years working with environmental nonprofits and natural resource agencies to foster environmental stewardship. She teaches courses in environmental ethics and sustainability at Marylhurst University and is director of Raindrops to Refuge, an environmental advocacy program. | |||||||
