Jay Henry Named Talent City Manager

Excerpt from an article by Tony Boom in the Medford Mail Tribune,
July 4, 2008.

A Southern Oregon native and former Klamath County department director has been hired as the new city manager for Talent, Ore.

Jay Henry, city manager in Polson, Mont., will start in mid-August. Henry replaces Betty Wheeler, who retires at the end of July. He will earn $80,000 annually.

"He grew up in Klamath County and has experience working with (county) government," said Mayor Don Steyskal. "He will be a good fit. He's used to small towns."

Henry said Polson is a great community, but a family tragedy prompted him and his wife, Evelyn, to return to this region. Their 19-year-old son passed away unexpectedly in February.

"It made my wife and I stop and take account of what's really important," said Henry. "We still have three adult children in Oregon, so we said let's look at moving back."

Henry was the first head of Klamath County's Community Development Department, a position he held from 2003 to 2007. The department was created to bring together building, planning, sanitation, parks, solid waste and community development functions.

From 1999 to 2003 Henry was the parks and solid waste supervisor for Klamath County. He has a master's of business administration from Marylhurst University near Lake Oswego, and a civil engineering degree from Oregon Institute of Technology. From 1971 through 2004 he was a cattle rancher in Merrill.
