Camping Trip that is Out of this World

Excerpt from an article in The Statesman Journal, May 13, 2009.

If you're looking for an excuse to go camping this weekend, here's a good one.

Professional and experienced amateur astronomers will share telescopes and insights Saturday during the 10th annual Star Party at Prineville Reservoir State Park 16 miles southeast of Prineville.

It's a family event, and features daylong activities paired with the search of the skies beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Schedule highlights:

-4:15 p.m. "Light Pollution and the Adventures of Winky the Light Photon" — City lights and problems they cause for star-gazers by Jan Dabrowski, Marylhurst University.

-7:30 p.m. "Astronomy 101" — An introduction to the night sky by Bob Grossfeld, the director of the Sunriver Observatory.

-8:30 p.m. "Searching for other Earths: 340 planets and Counting!" — An update on current and future space missions searching for other Earth-like planets in the galaxy, given by Tony Leavitt, an aerospace education specialist with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field near Sunnyvale, Calif.

Besides darkness to an astronomer's liking, Prineville Reservoir State Park offers nearly 100 campsites, six cabins and plenty of shoreline space.
