Marylhurst University
in the Community
Marylhurst University's roots are those of social activism and community service. This commitment continues today, through service to organizations including:
Christie School
A residential treatment center for severely emotionally disturbed children, The Christie School has a long association with Marylhurst, as a neighbor and prior affiliation with the Sisters of the Holy Names. Through a practicum program, Marylhurst students work with Christie School residents.
Clackamas Women's Services
Clackamas Women's Services provides the only two emergency shelters and crisis line for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Clackamas County. Each holiday season, Marylhurst staff, faculty and students donate clothes, household and personal items.
Marysville Elementary School
Marylhurst faculty and staff donate volunteer time to Marysville, located in Southeast Portland. Marysville serves families below the poverty level; many speak English as a second language. Students from Marylhurst tutor Marysville students throughout the school year.
The Maybelle Clark Macdonald Center
The Macdonald Center serves the "invisible poor" people who live alone in low-income housing. Students from Marylhurst University work with the Macdonald Center visiting program to learn about poverty, social justice, mental illness and community building.
Oregon Food Bank
Every holiday season, Marylhurst places food barrels throughout the campus to collect for the Oregon Food Bank, an agency that distributes donated food to nonprofit hunger relief agencies in the state of Oregon.
