Creative Arts Day Camp
for Children with Special Needs
For Release: April 28, 2008
A six-day Creative Arts Day Camp designed for children with special needs such as learning challenges and autistic spectrum will be held at Marylhurst University from July 14 to July 19. The camp is open to children of all abilities, ages 6 to 12. Registration is $80 per child. Some scholarships are available. For additional information, call 503-699-6263.
Children will participate in art, music, movement and drama experiences that reinforce the ideal of achieving one's maximum potential. An interdisciplinary team from Marylhurst's music therapy and art therapy counseling programs will provide a range of learning opportunities that foster growth in essential areas. This integrated program promotes communicative, behavioral, academic, motor, social and emotional development.
"The children learn new skills while participating in music and art activities during hands-on, multisensory experiences," said Terra Merrill, clinical coordinator for Marylhurst University's music therapy program. "Instructors combine the theories of creativity and child development to provide projects and experiences that are both fun and challenging."
Therapeutic recreation activities facilitated by a recreational therapist have been added to this year's camp. Family members are invited to join the campers on July 19 at a recognition and awards picnic.
Marylhurst University, located one mile south of Lake Oswego on Highway 43, offers professional certificates, graduate and undergraduate degrees including a Bachelor of Music Therapy and a Master of Arts in Art Therapy Counseling.
