Service at Marylhurst

Marylhurst University’s roots are those of social activism and community service. This commitment continues today through the Marylhurst Service Program.

The Marylhurst Service Program provides volunteer service to community-based organizations through service activities, service learning and service partnerships.

The Service Program seeks to:

• Increase Marylhurst volunteer hours in community-service programs and activities

• Positively impact our community through the quality of Marylhurst volunteerism

• Develop a sustainable culture of community service that influences all Marylhurst constituents: faculty, staff, students, alumni and others.

Service Activities

The Marylhurst Service Program coordinates service-oriented activities, such as food drives, group volunteer activities, and fundraising events, exponentially expanding Marylhurst's outreach and support to communities and people in need.

Service Learning

Marylhurst students apply, integrate and deepen their academic learning while addressing real needs in the community.

Courses such as Compassion in Action provide the opportunity to directly apply academic studies in the community through service and to have such service activities inform students' academic learning.

Service Partnerships

Fostering service partnerships allow the University to create and support sustainable service-oriented projects, resulting in opportunities for service activities and service learning.

Community partners include:

Christie School

A residential treatment center for severely emotionally disturbed children, The Christie School has a long association with Marylhurst, as a neighbor and prior affiliation with the Sisters of the Holy Names.

Clackamas Women's Services

Clackamas Women's Services provides the only two emergency shelters and crisis line for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Clackamas County.

Marysville Elementary School

Marysville serves families below the poverty level; many speak English as a second language.

The Maybelle Clark Macdonald Center

The Macdonald Center serves the "invisible poor" – people who live alone in low-income housing.

Oregon Food Bank

The Oregon Food Bank distributes donated food to nonprofit hunger relief agencies in the state of Oregon.
