  • Composition — Demonstrate basic compositional and arranging skills

After you've successfully completed your internship, you'll receive a Marylhurst University degree and be eligible to take the national board certification exam to earn the professional credential MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified).

Career Paths

Music therapists are employed in many types of environments, including residences for developmentally disabled persons, mental health clinics, special education facilities, hospice programs, private practice, clinical research centers, correctional facilities and wellness programs.

Completing the bachelor of music therapy program also prepares you for a graduate program in music therapy at any AMTA-approved university offering the master's degree. Other graduate program options include, but are not limited to, speech therapy, psychology, special education and counseling.

Second-degree students/ equivalency program

If you already have a bachelor's degree and are interested in becoming a board-certified music therapist, we offer a degree equivalency program.

  • If you have a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music Education from a National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited school, your previous music coursework fulfills most of the Marylhurst Music Core, Applied Study on the Primary Instrument, and Major and Small Ensembles — approximately 77 credits would remain to be fulfilled at Marylhurst.
  • If you have a Bachelor of Arts in Music or a music degree from a school not accredited by NASM, your transcripts will be evaluated during the admission process. You may have additional coursework to fulfill to attain the musical proficiency required for professional music programs.
  • If you have a bachelor's degree in psychology, many of the required 28 credits in the human sciences, science and mathematics will have already been satisfied — approximately 120 credits of the major would remain to be fulfilled. This would take a minimum of three years plus six months of internship.
