Dr. Petra Kern, MT-DMtG, MT-BC, MTA, is a certified music therapist in the United States, Canada, and Germany and earned her doctoral degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Witten-Herdecke. She is the owner of the California-based company Music Therapy Consulting, adjunct professor at Marylhurst University, and adjunct associate professor at the University of Louisville. Previously she taught at the State University of New York at New Paltz and the University of Windsor in Canada, and continues to guest lecture at universities worldwide.
Dr. Kern has worked in several clinical settings, serving the youngest to the oldest with various disabilities and health issues. Her clinical and research focus is on young children with autism spectrum disorder, inclusion, and staff training. In 2008, she received the research/publications award of the American Music Therapy Association for her studies conducted at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Kern is a frequent international speaker and serves on several national and international music therapy committees and boards. She is the immediate past president of the World Federation of Music Therapy and serves on the editorial boards of Music Therapy Perspectives, the Canadian Journal of Music Therapy, and Music and Medicine. She also is the editor-in-chief of the online magazine imagine and co-co-chairs AMTA's Early Childhood Network. In 2012, she received the national Service Award of American Music Therapy Association and in 2013 the Marylhurst University's Faculty Innovation and Excellence Grant.
