BA in Art

The Bachelor of Arts program is ideal for students seeking a general knowledge of art for the purpose of working in art-related fields, art administration or art education, or to prepare to enter Marylhurst's Master of Arts in Art Therapy Counseling program.

For the BA degree, 78 credits in art are required (of the total of 180 required for the bachelor's degree), including fundamental courses in design, drawing, digital imaging, photography and art history.

All of the BA in Art degree requirements have been designed by the professional artists who are members of our faculty so you can be sure that what you study is directly related to the world of contemporary practice outside the classroom.

Professional Connections

You'll also understand how to move into an art career, and be introduced to art dealers, art critics, museum curators and other art professionals who make up the regional art network. You'll learn the skills to present yourself (resume, portfolio), manage art business (record keeping, doing your taxes) and pursue life in the art world.

You'll have the opportunity to meet some of the Northwest's most respected artists through the program of exhibitions in The Art Gym.

Internships

If you are interested in art administration, we can arrange work experience with Portland area art galleries or non-profit organizations.

Career Paths

Graduates may pursue gallery representation or public commissions, or become teachers, art consultants or museum employees. Students who choose specialized training in photography or computer applications may find work in fields such as studio photography, advertising or computer-aided design. Graduates also are prepared to apply to master's degree programs in the visual arts, design, architecture, art education or art therapy counseling.
