Sustainability Studies

Make a difference. Integrate coursework across several disciplines to find solutions to today's environmental challenges by addressing the multiple and complex sustainability needs of our society.

In this program, you will:

  • Analyze the cultural roots of perceptions about nature and how such social institutions shape human interactions with the natural world
  • Examine the role of organizations in building sustainable operations, strategies and practices
  • Investigate how individual and society's technological choices are interrelated with societal change, human population growth and human impacts on the environment
  • Design and meet your own specific educational goals
  • Engage in relevant actions in support of sustainability locally or globally
  • Develop an integrated, interdisciplinary perspective of sustainability

 

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 180 total quarter credits
Minimum of 60 upper-division credits
Minimum of 45 credits from Marylhurst
60 credits required for major

Organizations and Leadership
Business Through a Different Lens
People, Profit, Planet: The New Management Imperative
Choose one of the following:
Business Economics
Economics of Sustainability: Theory and Practice
Entrepreneurial Management
Intercultural Communication
Negotiation
Listening to the World: Developing Environmental and Intercultural Literacy
or 3 crs. of sustainability seminars, such as MGT or ID Sustainability Workshops

Environmental Science
Introduction to Sustainability: Being Green in a Brown World
Environmental Ethics
Choose one from the following:
Principles of Environmental Science
Population and Global Resources
Sustainable Development: A Global Approach
A Survey of Environmental Education
Global Environmental Concerns
Introduction to Environmental Mediation

Note: Appropriate transfer, independent study, practicum, or other coursework may be substituted for any of the required concentration courses with the approval of the department chair.

Complementary Coursework (min. of 21 crs.)

Student-designed program of study that complements required concentration courses with focused application of your choice. Designed with department adviser to support your sustainability studies mission statement and chosen learning outcomes written in Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies course.
