A board certified music therapist, Dr. West has extensive clinical experience in mental health, oncology, hospice and medical rehabilitation. She is a fellow and past president of the Association for Music and Imagery and has served on the editorial board of Music Therapy Perspectives.
Her interdisciplinary doctoral studies in music therapy and health psychology culminated in a research project examining effects of music and imagery on measures of mood and the stress hormone cortisol.
Dr. West has an extensive record of regional, national and international professional presentations. Her scholarly work includes book chapter collaborations with leading professionals in medicine/health psychology and neuroscience/rehabilitation.
Dr. West has served as program director and developed curricula for undergraduate and master's level music therapy programs and has taught music therapy in Florida, Indiana, California and Oregon. She currently serves on the American Music Therapy Association's academic program approval committee.
As a member of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music training staff of Therapeutic Arts Institute and of Anna Maria College Institute for Music and Consciousness, Dr. West provides advanced clinical supervision to trainees and offers GIM private practice / music therapy consulting services in Portland, Oregon.
Part Native American, Therese has specialized in diversity issues and competencies in clinical, research and teaching arenas. A flautist with a passion for making and sharing music, Therese has participated in a gamelan and has taught traditional Native American drum building. She has studied drumming in Afro-Caribbean, Japanese Taiko and African traditions, the last occurring in Jamaica where she supervised music therapy service work and clinical training in an immersion learning environment.
