Department of Art Therapy Counseling

Established in 1986, our MA in Art Therapy Counseling has been approved by the American Art Therapy Association since 1991. Truly, the art therapy counseling program at Marylhurst University is the only program of its kind in Oregon.

Initially, art therapy was used with children and adults with severe mental illnesses. Today, it is an accepted therapeutic approach that is recognized as effective with a broad range of clients.

The Marylhurst program is designed to prepare you to work as team members in facilities that provide therapeutic and counseling services, such as community mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, therapeutic schools, day programs and residential treatment programs. If you are already working in the field, we offer workshops and electives that may be taken for continuing education credit.

Our graduates are highly desired by employers and can choose from an array of career paths because they have rigorous training in both counseling and art. They are skillful in leading groups and developing action-oriented therapies. Our alumni have been very successful in finding positions; some have been offered jobs before they even graduate.
