Pastoral Care or Theological Studies: How to Apply to Marylhurst

Application Deadline

For the theological studies certificate, applications are accepted on a rolling basis so you can start each term (fall, winter, spring or summer). We advise that you submit your application at least four weeks prior to the start of classes. For the pastoral care certificate, applications are accepted year-round, and classes begin each fall term.

Pastoral Care or Theological Studies: Admissions Requirements

Because you are applying to a graduate program at Marylhurst, we require that you hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. You will also need to take and submit your Millers Analogies Test scores.

Certificate Application Process

Here are the items you will need to submit to formally apply for the graduate certificate in Pastoral Care or in Theological Studies program. As you review the list, know that we’re here to help you if you have any questions about the required materials for admissions. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

  • Complete the online application (select “certificate” for academic division, and in program of study either Pastoral Care or Theological Studies). Don’t worry about finishing the application in one session. You can save your work, log out and return to the application at a later time. Your information will be saved.
  • Pay the $50 nonrefundable fee
  • Within the online application, you will also be directed to submit:
    • Resume
    • Official transcripts for all colleges and universities attended
    • Brief autobiography
    • Recommendations
    • Statement of intent
    • Miller Analogies Test scores

Interview
As part of the application process, you will also be invited for an interview with program faculty. Interviews are scheduled once we receive your completed application.

Official Transcripts
Official transcripts must arrive at Marylhurst University in the original unopened envelope as issued by the originating institution with an institutional stamp or signature on the closed envelope flap. Sounds very legal, but it’s pretty straightforward: contact your previous institutions and request an official transcript to be sent directly to Marylhurst: 17600 Pacific HWY, PO Box 261, Marylhurst, OR 97036-0261. Official transcripts can also be sent via a secure delivery service such as National Student Clearinghouse, eSCRIP-SAFE, or Parchment. Directions on how to do this will also be available within the online admissions application.

Statement of Intent
This is a brief essay in which you introduce yourself and share information about your academic goals and experiences. This is not a formal academic or research paper, but it should be proofread for errors and grammar to ensure readability. This essay may be used as part of the scholarship consideration process at Marylhurst University. Please write a one-to-two page paper in 12pt. font. Make sure to include your name in the top, right-hand corner of each page. Please address the following questions:

  • Why have you chosen your course of study? If undecided, please comment on your area(s) of interest.
  • Why have you chosen Marylhurst University?
  • How does this degree fit into your past/current life experiences and future goals?

To submit the statement, you can upload it inside the online application portal, or email it to admissions@marylhurst.edu or FAX it to 503.699.6320.

Recommendations
We really simplified this process. All you will need are the names and contact information (email) for your recommenders. In the online application, you will be prompted to input their information. This sends your recommenders an email with directions on how to submit their recommendation letter. Easy, right?

Autobiography
We’re not looking for a novel, but we do want to know about your life, your experiences and a little more about your background. And by brief, we mean one-to-two pages at the max. This is really your chance to let our faculty know who you are, your viewpoints and past experiences.

Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
This is a standardized test that many graduate schools require. Through a series of 100+ questions (computer-based), it assesses your logical and analytical reasoning.
