Miguel Petchkovsky - Artist in Residence

The Art Gym and the Department of Art at Marylhurst are pleased to participate in a shared residency with artist Miguel Petchkovsky, International Media Arts Curator, of the Time_frame Foundation.

The Case Study, Dutch Media Art

The Case Study will focus on six Dutch video art/new media/animation artists — Marnix de Nijs, Edwin van der Heide, Jeroen Kooijmans, Robbie Cornelissen, Jacco Olivier, Daan Roosegaard and Geert Mull. It will also introduce Portland audiences to the historically important collections of the Netherlands Media Art Institute.

New Paradigms in Contemporary Art, New Media and Public Space

How do new paradigms for viewing and creating contemporary art like Video Guerrilha, Time Frame's Initiatives, Nuit Blanche, Matadero, Madrid, and Media Lab, Prado, grow out of older forms of communal cultural life and public space? How do these new forms impact community life? How can new forms build on the participatory nature of more traditional communal spaces and activities?

Case Study of Netherlands-based Time_frame Foundation's outreach project in Havana, Cuba, and presentations of works produced there. Program emphasis will be on the establishment of cross-cultural ties between first world countries, such as The Netherlands, and nations in transition such as Cuba. What is the informal role of the arts in cultural diplomacy? How can we build on the international arts community's ability to communicate across political and cultural boundaries?

Miguel Petchkovsky will give a presentation on the activities of Netherlands-based Time_frame Foundation and NIMK in taking video beyond the confines of a gallery or theatrical setting. Examples of video beyond the screen to include: Visual Dome, Video Guerrilha, immersive new media technology, monumental video art, urban projection mapping, as well as an introduction to related projects from Time_frame partners, SAT Montreal and Currents Santa Fe.

About The Art Gym

The Art Gym, as a program of the Department of Art & Interior Design at Marylhurst University.

The Art Gym is located on the third floor of the B.P. John Administration Building on the Marylhurst University campus, 10 miles south of Portland, Oregon on Highway 43. During the exhibition season, The Art Gym is open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free.

The Art Gym programs are supported in part through grants from the Oregon Arts Commission, Regional Arts & Culture Council, Clackamas County Cultural Coalition, National Endowment for the Arts and Oregon Cultural Trust, foundations, businesses and individuals.
