The MA in Art Therapy Counseling program integrates students’ knowledge of visual arts and art processes with the study of psychotherapy and counseling.

AATA Approval

Marylhurst's MA in Art Therapy Counseling program was established in 1986 and is the only program of its kind in Oregon. It has been approved by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) since 1991. The AATA's comprehensive review noted the high regard that students have for the Marylhurst program.

The Program

Art therapy is about human health and recovery. At Marylhurst, art experiences are integrated with most of the core classes. Students use creative work to understand theories of art therapy, clients and therapeutic relationships. While this artistic focus may be different from the student’s prior experience, it does lead to the creation of authentic and aesthetically satisfying work.

In this program, students:

Develop professional skills to prepare for clinical work

Earn a master's degree in as little as two years, studying full- or part-time

Gain extensive experience in therapeutic settings through the art therapy practicum

The Practicum

Students experience the clinical work environment four hours a week in the first year. The second year revolves around an intensive practicum in a clinical setting – 240 hours a term providing 12 hours of direct art therapy counseling services each week. On-site guidance and weekly meetings with the practicum instructor and peers ensure continued professional and personal growth.

Career Paths

Graduates of the Marylhurst program are prepared to work with children and adults in a variety of settings such as community mental health clinics, therapeutic schools, residential and day treatment programs, hospitals, correctional treatment settings and nursing homes.

Professional Credentials

Marylhurst's MA in Art Therapy Counseling is approved by the American Art Therapy Association. Following completion of 1,000 hours of supervised post-master's experience, you may apply for the professional credential of Registered Art Therapist (ATR).

Upon passing the exam administered by the Art Therapy Credentials Board, National Board Certification (ATR-BC) is awarded.

Graduates of Marylhurst's master's program are eligible to become Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHP) in Oregon.

Graduates are also eligible to become Nationally Board Certified Counselors (NCC).

The master's program curriculum meets the academic requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in Oregon.

Both the LPC and NCC credentials require supervised post-degree clinical experience and successful completion of an examination.

Outstanding Faculty

Art Therapy Counseling faculty consists of practicing art therapists, counselors, psychologists and researchers who have chosen to enhance their personal and professional lives by making a commitment to educating the next generation of therapists.
