Summer Workshops 2008

Counseling professionals can explore the expressive therapies in a comfortable and creative way – through summer workshops offered by Marylhurst University's Art Therapy Counseling Department. Workshop instructors are practicing therapists with many years of experience.

Considering art therapy as a possible career option? Marylhurst's summer workshops are an excellent opportunity to try a course or two. A background in psychology and the art form are the only prerequisites.

Marylhurst University is located 10 minutes south of Portland, Oregon.

Continuing Education Credit

Summer workshops may be taken as Continuing Education Credit (CEU). One CEU equals 10 contact hours of Continuing Education Credit.

The Marylhurst University Art Therapy Program is recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) to offer continuing education for National Certified Counselors.

Introduction to Art Therapy Workshop

July 11 & 12
Fri, 9am-4:30pm; Sat, 9am-12:30pm

This workshop combines an enjoyable hands-on approach with discussions, videotape, and art examples to introduce students to art therapy. Recommended for those exploring art therapy as a career option and for human services practitioners who wish to acquire basic understanding of art therapy.

Instructor:
Christine Turner is the chairperson of the graduate program in art therapy at Marylhurst University. She is an art therapist and licensed counselor practicing in the local area.

Art Therapy Media and Methods

July 12 & 13
Sat, 1:30-5pm; Sun, 9am-4:30pm

The material presented has applications in the creative classroom and in the expressive therapy setting. Through hands-on exploration, discussion and film, students are introduced to the structural and psychological properties of varied art media. Recommended as follow-up to Introduction to Art Therapy Workshop.

Multimedia Maskmaking

July 18, 19 & 20
Fri, 4-8:30 pm; Sat, 9am-6pm; Sun, 9am-5:30 pm

This stimulating workshop offers students the opportunity to creatively explore media such as plaster gauze, clay, papier mache and leather as they design and develop their own masks. Presentations of masks from around the world illustrate the history of masks in various cultures and their uses in rituals, theatre and for communication exercises in settings such as schools and agencies.

Instructor:
Donvieve is a California Arts Council Artist in the Schools, and education director for Ink People Center for the Arts. She has taught throughout the United States, traveled and worked with mask makers in Bali, Mexico, Central America, and Europe.

Family Art Therapy

July 25, 26 & 27
Fri, noon-5pm; Sat/Sun, 9am-5pm 

This advanced class provides an introduction to family art therapy and family systems theory. The course integrates theoretical presentations on several clinical approaches with an experiential component. Students explore art therapy techniques and directives, group processes and case presentations designed to deepen their understanding of art therapy’s applications in family work.

Instructor:
Susan Brook is an art therapist and counselor practicing in Southern Oregon.

Introduction to Dance Movement Therapy

August 1 & 2
Fri, 6-9pm; Sat, 9am-5pm

This course includes an overview of the profession, treatment approaches with different ages and populations, assessment strategies and research. Participants learn how dance movement therapy fosters growth and awareness by participating in a movement experience, reading, lecture and discussion.  

Instructor:
Maria Brignola is certified as a dance movement therapist and works as part of a clinical team in a hospital.

Clinical Neuroscience: Applications for Treating Stress

August 8 & 9
Fri, 6:30-9:15; Sat, 9am-5pm

The class will explore the neurobiological roots of stress and examine the neuroscience findings regarding how the brain works in therapy and responds to treatment. Practical tools to manage and cope with stress from a biological/psychological and social perspective will be examined through the lens of clinical neuroscience.

Instructor:
Greg Crosby is an experienced therapist and teacher who coordinates group therapy programs for an agency in the Portland area.

Dollmaking:
The therapeutic use of creative process and symbolic imagery with children & adolescents

August 15 & 16
Fri, 2-6pm; Sat, 9am-4pm 

This workshop will involve students' creation of their own, soft-bodied dolls, using a variety of materials and tools, including limited use of a sewing machine. This experiential project will be put in context of art therapy theory and practice related to the use of media, the doll as a container for therapeutic concerns, and questions that may surface before embarking on such a process with young clients. Students should plan to work on their projects between the Friday and Saturday sessions.

Instructor:
Sarah Slayton is an assistant professor in the Art Therapy Counseling Department with many years of experience as a therapist.

Art Therapy with Medically Ill Children, Adolescents and their Families

August 22 & 23
Fri, 6-9pm; Sat, 9am-5pm

Participants in this course will learn how to utilize art therapy techniques with children, teens and their families experiencing sudden illness, chronic illness and terminal illness. The course will include lectures, experientials and case studies.  

Instructor:
Rachel O'Rourke is an art therapist with experience in medical settings in the Portland area.
