Irish Language Immersion Day

May 31, 2008

Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Marylhurst campus
Registration deadline: Wednesday, May 28
$40 fee includes all activities and a box lunch.

An Irish Language Immersion Day — for fluent speakers and absolute beginners — will introduce the delights of the Irish language during courses and workshops at Marylhurst University.

Activities, which include classes on Irish music and dance, will be conducted in an encouraging atmosphere with an emphasis on conversation. Participating instructors are experienced in teaching Irish as a second language.

The day concludes with the West Coast book launch of "Súil Siar" by Barra Ó Donnabháin. The book, a collection of 32 essays in the original Irish, was edited and translated to English by Hilary Sweeney and Eibhlin Zurell. Sweeney and Zurell will be on hand to discuss Ó Donnabháin's research and writing about politics, social studies, literature and history.

Barra Ó Donnabháin was a longtime Irish language columnist for the Irish Echo, the largest Irish American weekly newspaper. Ó Donnabháin, who recently passed away, was known for his contribution to the Irish language movement across North America.
