Reading Endorsement Program

The Reading Endorsement program is designed for licensed teachers. Learn alongside peers in small, seminar-style classes taught by expert faculty.

Upon completion of this program, educators will be able to:

  • Utilize research-based strategies and assessment tools to inform instruction,
  • Meet the needs of individual learners, and
  • Understand issues related to effective reading instruction.

Focus Areas

Depending on the applicant's interest and teaching level, the educator may focus in:

  • Early Childhood and Elementary
  • Elementary and Middle School
  • Middle School and High School

Curriculum

All Reading Endorsement candidates take the following courses:

Language & Language Development
An introduction to theories of language acquisition and applications to the classroom.

Content-Area Vocabulary Development
Develop an understanding of what vocabulary students need to learn in specific content areas.

Reading Assessment
Use student assessment data to catalyze and support improvement in reading.

Leading for Literacy
Gain leadership techniques, skills and strategies for working with adult learners.

Foundations of Emergent & Early Reading
Research the science and stages of beginning reading and writing instruction.

Practicum
A position-embedded experience to apply pedagogy, diagnostics, assessment and leadership knowledge skills.
