BA in English Literature & WritingRecognizing the beauty and power of the written word enables us to understand how language affects us as individuals and as members of communities. We are moved by different kinds of writing in many ways. Writers influence our ideas or values, persuade us to action and refine our emotions. An appreciation of language and literature also enhances our ability to inspire and influence others through writing. In the English Literature and Writing program at Marylhurst, students have numerous opportunities to explore ideas through courses shared with departments such as Cultural and Historical Studies, Communication Studies and Human Sciences. Through this integrated curriculum, students gain an understanding of literature and other types of writing as works of art as they investigate the connections between language, society and history. The Marylhurst ExperienceAt Marylhurst, students find flexibility and convenience in a stimulating environment.
ConcentrationsChoose from three concentrations: Literature emphasizes interpretation with a knowledge of literary, historical and social contexts to guide the understanding of meaning. Rhetoric and Teaching emphasizes the skill and teaching of composition, with a grounding in rhetorical theory and composition pedagogy. Creative Writing combines core courses in literature and writing with specialized workshops designed to refine skills in creative writing. While each concentration stresses different aspects of language practice, all investigate the interrelated aspects of the program interpretation, composition and creativity. Outstanding FacultyThe English Literature and Writing faculty includes prize-winning authors and poets, published scholars and professional writers all committed to a challenging teaching and learning experience that supports each students intellectual, creative and professional goals. Career PathsGraduates will be prepared to enter professions or pursue post-graduate studies in fields which require strong writing ability coupled with critical thinking skills such as teaching, law, communications, journalism and business. Graduates leave Marylhurst with skills in interpretation, writing and speaking. These skills, highly valued by graduate schools and prospective employers, demonstrate the insight and problem-solving ability a student develops in a liberal arts setting, particularly in this major's explorations of culture, literary art and history. | |||||||
