Firefighter Partnership Program

Firefighters seeking promotional opportunities and increased career options can use their free time to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree at Marylhurst University. Academic offerings can be customized to meet individual personal and professional goals.

Marylhurst classes are small and provide a supportive, dynamic learning environment. Most students work full-time and bring fresh perspectives from professional experience.

Marylhurst faculty are recognized leaders in their areas of expertise – managers, marketers, entrepreneurs, published writers, artists, scientists and accomplished scholars. Each brings practical, tested experience to the classroom.

Flexible Scheduling

Marylhurst provides maximum flexibility to accommodate a firefighter's busy life. On-campus classes are offered evenings, days and weekends.

Online classes are offered every term. Students can log into a virtual classroom anytime day or night via the Internet. Several programs can be completed entirely online.

Some classes are scheduled to make special accomodation for off-duty time, so firefighters don't have to use vacation time or trade shifts to attend class.

One-On-One Advising

An admissions advisor works individually with each new student to create a personalized academic degree plan to meet the student's current needs and long-range goals.

Once enrolled in a degree program, the department chair serves as advisor, providing academic guidance every step of the way.

Transfer Credit

An admissions specialist will provide a fast and free evaluation that shows how existing or block transfer credits will apply to a Marylhurst degree.

Many courses designated as vocational or technical are accepted as electives. Coursework completed long ago is often valid and accepted at Marylhurst.

Specific questions about transfer credits can be answered by a Marylhurst admissions advisor.

Fire Science and DPSST Credits

Credits earned from an accredited institution may be transferred to Marylhurst. Fire science administration credits can be used as a concentration within a degree program.

Hazardous Materials Training Program

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue's Hazardous Materials Training Program, completed in 1993 or more recently, will transfer as three lower-division credits toward an undergraduate degree.

National Fire Academy

Many National Fire Academy courses bear transferable college credit that is honored by Marylhurst University. These courses, approved by the National Program of Non-collegiate Sponsored Instruction (PONSI) and/or the American Council on Education (ACE), include Executive Fire Officer Program (EFOP) courses.

Financing an Education

Students whose employers reimburse education expenses at the end of the term may make arrangements to defer tuition and fees, so they don’t have pay these costs up front.

Scholarships and financial assistance packages are available for fire department personnel and their family members.
