Instructional Designer (Faculty Appointment) - CLOSEDREPORTS TO:Director for the Center of Learning & Technology
CLASSIFICATION:Exempt, Full-Time (12-Month Appointment)
PURPOSE OF POSITION:To build the capacity of faculty to design and develop online, hybrid, and web-supported courses that meet University online course quality standards and industry best practices for online learning for non-traditional, adult learners. This position will provide direct services to liberal arts and professional program faculty university-wide. However, the position will work indirectly and collaboratively with instructional designers responsible for the undergraduate and graduate Business programs and the Accelerated Online Program (AOP).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:1. Provide on-call consulting services to faculty in the design, development, and implementation of effective web-based courses and course materials (i.e., fully online, hybrid, and web-supported). (Note: Consultation services will require working some non-traditional work hours.) 2. Work with Instructional Technologist to assist faculty with learning how to use the learning management system and other technical tools to effectively facilitate student learning. 3. Assist Director in designing curricula for, and conducting, on-site and web-based professional development workshops for faculty on topics associated with instructional design and learning theory, online learning, and appropriate application of multimedia. 4. Through a variety of different means, research and communicate periodically to faculty current best practices in online teaching and learning for non-traditional adult learners. 5. Assist Director in monitoring online courses to ensure that they meet the University's basic minimum standards for online course quality. 6. Work closely with the University's Assessment Committee and Educational Assessment Technical Specialist to ensure that University standards, commitments, and best practices in learner-centered, outcomes-based course evaluation and program assessment are appropriately reflected in online courses. Work collaboratively with the Faculty Development Committee and related faculty committees that focus on faculty professional development and support to effectively expand opportunities and services to all online faculty. 7. Work collaboratively with instructional designers in Business programs and the Accelerated Online Program (AOP) to identify and actively promote quality course design and to enhance faculty skills in effective andragogy throughout the University. 8. Assist Director with researching and evaluating appropriateness and effectiveness of the Centers instructional design and instructional multimedia services. 9. Coordinate instructional design services with user support services provided by the Instructional Technologist and Marylhurst Help Desk staff.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:1. Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field required. 2. Minimum of three years experience in online teaching within a college / university setting, preferably within an institution that focuses on non-traditional, adult learners. 3. Minimum three years demonstrated experience in building the capacity of faculty to appropriately and effectively design, develop, and implement quality online courses. 4. Demonstrated knowledge and application of adult learning theory, instructional design, and appropriate use of asynchronous and asynchronous instructional technology within various online formats (fully online, hybrid / blended, classroom-based multimedia). 5. Experience with learning management systems; experience with web-site development preferred. 6. Proficiency in the design, development, implementation, and assessment of professional development workshops and materials. 7. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. 8. Takes initiative while being a team player. 9. Commitment to customer service.
POSITION HOURS:This position requires a significant number of non-traditional work hours.
