Diana Rummel
Psychology

Diana Rummel, a Vice President and loan officer at Today's Bank in Vancouver, describes herself as a lifelong student. "I decided it was time to pull it all together for a diploma," she said.

"My goal was to graduate with a degree in Psychology, no later than Spring 2005. It was my present to myself — I celebrated my 50th birthday that July," she explained.

Diana had enjoyed many careers in hospitality management, as a real estate agent, a mortgage lender and a commercial banker. With the help of her Marylhurst degree, she plans to make a contribution in the area of low-cost housing. "Housing needs for families in poverty are escalating rapidly," she noted. "My Marylhurst education will give me the tools I need to complement my existing knowledge in real estate and finance."

A Higher Level of Knowledge

Initially, Diana was intrigued by Marylhurst's Prior Learning Assessment program. She also was attracted by the low student-teacher ratio and flexible scheduling of classes.

Upon further examination, she found that the University's environment and culture aligned with her personal values, she said. "Marylhurst embraces the uniqueness and dignity of each individual while staying committed to quality academics. Here, it is more important that the student 'know' and 'understand,' than to memorize data."

Diana was particularly impressed by the teaching methods at Marylhurst. "I believe that education demonstrated through writing about one's understanding of research findings gives students a higher level of knowledge than the traditional read and test method.

"When I graduated from Marylhurst, I left with more than a diploma."
