LRN 311, 312 & 003
Portfolio Development Studies
Students planning a PLA Portfolio of more than 12 credits will enroll in LRN 311 Portfolio Development Studies after completing LRN 305.
In LRN 311, and the following term in LRN 312, the PLA student works independently, with close, individualized guidance and support of the PLA instructor, applying the concepts and skills learned in LRN 305 to the development, research and writing of additional essays and selection of appropriate supporting documentation. Students continue to receive instruction as needed on the conventions of academic writing and research as they prepare essays for submission to content specialist evaluators.
To pass LRN 311 and LRN 312, students must submit a minimum of three essays in acceptable form representing a request for at least nine PLA credits.
LRN 003 is a zero-credit tutorial course that may be repeated several times as the student works toward completing the Portfolio Plan.
Extension Term
All students in the PLA process are eligible for one free Extension Term, usually taken the term the student completes and submits the final PLA portfolio.
Submitting the Final Portfolio
When all essays have been evaluated and credit recommendations have been made, the student petitions the PLA office to have these credits transcripted. This involves the submission of a completed portfolio consisting of all essays and documentation for which the student is requesting credit, along with the students current Education Degree Plan (available from the academic advisor), resume, autobiography, goal statement and a short statement summarizing the students learning and experience in the PLA process.
The University Business Office is then authorized to bill the student for the total number of credits you earned, based on the current fee schedule. The current fee is $41 per credit earned through the PLA portfolio development process. When this amount is paid, the credits are then posted on the students official Marylhurst University transcript. Each students completed PLA portfolio remains on file with Marylhurst University for six years.
Note: The evaluation fees for the first nine PLA credits that are evaluted and earned during LRN 305 are included in the cost of the tuition for LRN 305. The student will pay the current evaluation fee for the subsequent credits evaluated and earned during LRN 311, 312, 003 or the extension term upon submission of the final portfolio.
