Graduate Certificate in Gerontology

The Gerontology Graduate Certificate program at Marylhurst University integrates professional and liberal arts studies, embracing a holistic approach to adult development and aging.

Students may complete the 21-credit certificate program or pursue a gerontology focus in the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) program.

In the Gerontology Graduate Certificate program, students:

Explore the social, psychological and biophysical changes that occur as part of the aging process;

Examine the political and economic issues of old age;

Recognize the importance of social, cultural and historical context in understanding the aging process;

Appreciate the diversity of individual aging experiences due to gender, race/ethnicity and class; and

Gather information about potential career, learning and service opportunities.

The Curriculum

Through four core courses plus additional courses selected from a menu of Gerontology courses, you will engage in traditional, rigorous scholarly inquiry in theory and research while you explore and conceptualize aging in creative, new ways.

Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Aging – Provides a comprehensive overview of the multidisciplinary field of gerontology.

Embodiment in Later Life – Focuses on the biological, physiological and health aspects of the aging experience.

Theorizing and Researching in Gerontology – Examines important gerontology theory and research; simultaneously, students are encouraged to formulate and pursue questions about adult development and aging.

Gerontology: Synthesis and Action – Integrates all coursework into a dynamic whole, allowing students to actualize learning in a variety of contexts and issues related to adult development and aging.
