Admission Requirements
BA in Music

Marylhurst welcomes prospective students at various stages in their musical development. While the admissions process into the BA in Music program is selective, it is not competitive. Applicants who demonstrate the potential to succeed in the program are admitted.

Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the University's general admission requirements, applicants must:

  • complete a performance audition, and
  • submit a completed application.

General Admission Requirements

Prospective students who do not meet the entrance standards are welcome to enroll for lessons at Marylhurst, non-credit or 100-level credit, to prepare for the admissions and audition process.

Preparing for the BA in Music

The music program at Marylhurst is rigorous and demands previous musical training. It is designed to be a four-year program. Transfer credits from other regionally accredited programs are welcome.

The following are guidelines that many students find helpful:

1. Study at least one principle instrument. It is expected that students pursuing music at the collegiate level have had at least several years of private music instruction before entering Marylhurst’s music program.

2. Pursue opportunities to perform both as a soloist and with others in a group setting.

3. Begin playing piano.

4. Learn how to read music (both treble and bass clefs). Marylhurst offers the online course MU 100: Fundamentals of Music every summer for students who need to strengthen note-reading skills before enrolling in MU 101: Musical Language I.
