Professional Activities

An active performer in the local jazz scene, Evans came to Portland from New Orleans in 1994. In the Crescent City he performed with Pete Fountain, B. B. King, Mose Allison, Nicholas Payton, Brian Blade, Johnny Vidacovich, Luther Kent, Matt Lemmler, Johnny Mathis, Gladys Knight, Mitzi Gaynor, Liberace, The Four Tops and The Temptations, among many others. For seven years he led the band on the National Historic Landmark Steamboat Delta Queen where he created specialized programs on American Music for groups from The Smithsonian, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi.

In the Northwest, he has performed or recorded with Art Abrams, Bryant Allard, Dan Balmer, Phil Baker, Mel Brown, Retta Christie, Steve Christofferson, Sandy Dennison, Dan Faehnle, Dave Frishberg, Jim Goodwin, Darrell Grant, Tom Grant, Carlton Jackson, Rebecca Kilgore, Nancy King, Joe La Barbera, Bob Magnusson, Shirley Nanette, Mia Nicholson, Eddie Parente, Randy Porter, Jean Ronne, Dan Schulte, Andre St. James, Ron Steen, Bobby Torres, Chris Tyle, Mike Wofford, Lee Wuthenow, Tall Jazz, the Portland Chamber Orchestra and many others.

Evans is also on the music faculty at Lewis & Clark.

Recordings

David's recent Heavywood CD "I Didn't Know About You", with Mike Wofford, Bob Magnusson and Joe LaBarbera, was released nationally to excellent reviews. He is a featured soloist on the 2007 Sony/BMG release "Histoire D'un Amour" by French pop star Dany Brillant, and "Magnolia" by the noted '20s revival band The Midnight Serenaders.
