Professional Activities

Served on the faculties of the University of California at San Diego, Palomar College, Keio University (Tokyo, Japan) and the University of Hong Kong.

Compositionally, Phillips works with combining multiple highly differentiated sound worlds, having them interact through juxtaposition, inter-penetration and convolution. The resulting synthesis of sounds is sometimes humorous and often mysterious or spiritual.

His musical projects often involve collaborations with performers, dancers and computer artists and involve the use of computer technology.

Awards

He has won numerous awards, grants and residencies.

Teachers

At UC-SC, Phillips studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Roger Reynolds.

He also studied with Robert Hall Lewis at the Peabody Conservatory and Peter Slowik at the Northwestern School of Music.
