“We look to recognize educators who promote STEM – science, technology, engineering and math,” explained retired Colonel James Fenner.

According to her students at Cathedral School in Portland, Mrs. Rae takes a hands-on approach.

“We don’t sit and take notes,” said 6th grade student Anna Niedermeyer. “We learned to build a piano out of cardboard and programmed it to play.”

Rae also caught the judges’ attention by instructing students to make Apps for smartphones.

Rae admits technology can upstage a teacher.

“It means you’re not always going to be the smartest one in the room, but it helps me learn something new through my students every day,” Rae said.

Liane Rae is a Marylhurst student, working toward her Master’s in Education degree. She was also named Apple Distinguished Educator in 2015.
