Marylhurst graduates making an impact in their communities
More than 400 bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates will be honored at Marylhurst University’s 122nd commencement, scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18 at the Oregon Convention Center. Each one will make his or her mark, whether through business ventures, creative endeavors – artists, musicians and authors – or addressing issues of social justice. Several Marylhurst graduates will see their education put to use immediately in their communities.
Ticey Jo Mason works for the Northwest Portland Indian Health Board, serving the 43 federally recognized tribes in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The organization’s human resources department will soon implement updated orientation materials, giving new employees an essential understanding of tribal history and culture, based on the research Ticey completed for her M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies. Beth Smoker was named vice president of the Sacramento Food Policy Council last fall, several months before she will receive her M.S. in Food Systems and Society. Denver Garrison completed most of his B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies while teaching English as a Second Language in Spain. Denver recently spoke at the European Youth Congress, and he will soon complete a Teaching English as a Foreign Language program that will place him on assignment in a new country. Audrey Fisher plans to use the creative writing skills she developed in the B.A. in English Literature & Writing program to write her own material – as a stand-up comic. And Angie Bozanich, watching her three children graduate from college, decided it was her time, too. Angie will earn her B.S. in Business & Leadership, which she’ll put to good use in her career at Mentor Graphics.
