Michelle Ross The Desire

The Art Gym will present Michelle Ross in a solo exhibition of her work from October 11, 2016 through December 9, 2016. Ross received her BFA from Paciﬁc Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, and her MFA from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, at such institutions as Sheppard Contemporary Gallery (University of Nevada, Reno); Portland Art Museum (Portland, Oregon); and Rome International University (Rome, Italy).
Ross has received numerous grants, awards, and fellowships, including a Hallie Ford Fellowship (Oregon), a MacDowell Fellowship (New Hampshire), a Portland Art Museum Contemporary Northwest Art Award (Oregon), and an Oregon Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship. She also has been short-listed for the Seattle Art Museum’s Betty Bowen Award (Washington). She has been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome (Rome, Italy) and has participated in residencies at the Vermont Studio Center (Vermont), the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica (Venice, Italy), and Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts (Oregon), where she was a recipient of the Ford Family Foundation’s Golden Spot Award.
Her work is held by a number of collections, including the Rhode Island School of Design Special Collections (Providence, Rhode Island), Willamette University (Salem, Oregon), and the Portland Art Museum (Portland, Oregon). Ross is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
An exhibition catalogue, designed by Heather Watkins, will include essays written by Abby McGehee, Stephanie Snyder, and Sue Taylor.

About The Art Gym
Since 1980, The Art Gym has been recognized as a venue exhibiting some of the most significant and timely art of this region. The mission of the gallery is to increase public understanding of contemporary art of the Pacific Northwest through exhibitions, artists’ projects, publications, and public engagement. The Art Gym is a non-collecting, non-commercial gallery that supports artists in creating ambitious and risk-taking projects at various stages in their careers. As an art space working within an academic venue we are committed to providing artistic and intellectual freedom. The Art Gym catalogues continue to be one of the greatest records of the contemporary art history of the Pacific Northwest, contributing to the discourse on contemporary art and representing the region. About the curator
Blake Shell is The Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Director and Curator of The Art Gym and Belluschi Pavilion at Marylhurst University, providing the artistic direction and leadership of the organization. Shell is a contemporary art curator and artist with over twelve years of experience in directing nonprofit and educational galleries. She received a BA in art from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and an MFA in photography from Savannah College of Art and Design. Her curatorial work has gained regional attention and press in the Pacific Northwest, as well as a national review on Artforum.com’s Critic’s Picks. Shell is currently a panelist for the Visual Chronicle of Portland, managed by Regional Arts & Culture Council.
