Certificate in Pastoral Care

Religion is more than a cultural force. It is a way for persons of all backgrounds and beliefs to express their experiences and visions of human existence: life, death, love, hope, struggle, compassion. Individuals share a need to discover that common truth with others. The Pastoral Care Certificate program at Marylhurst is designed to guide students toward that truth.

While these certificate courses are ideal for changing career direction or enhancing a current career in ministry, caregiving or teaching, they also serve as a foundation to complete a Marylhurst bachelor's or master's degree program.

Classes are scheduled to not conflict with services, so that ministers and other spiritual professionals may attend.

Learning Outcomes

The Pastoral Care program explores specialized subjects within religion, integrating studies in scripture, ministry, theology and psychology.

In this program, students:

  • Train in methods for ministering to the sick, the elderly, those in need and those who simply require guidance;
  • Learn about the relationship of religion and philosophy; and
  • Engage in an internship.

Career Paths

Individuals and organizations increasingly are seeking a source of personal and philosophical growth. Pastoral care careers include caregiver, educator, author, counselor, therapist and minister.
