BA in Science

Persons fascinated by science often find it difficult to choose a single educational focus, such as biology or physics. At Marylhurst, where learning is about making connections, students can earn a bachelor's degree with a program that integrates the sciences.

Students choose one of two concentrations: environmental science or general science. Both programs are designed to provide a cross-disciplinary foundation in science.

Learning Outcomes

The BA in Science program provides students with an exciting new awareness, an increased sensitivity of and respect for all life on earth and the earth itself.

In this program, students:

  • Get practical hands-on experience in the natural world;
  • Utilize state-of-the-art audio, visual and computer facilities that simulate the natural world;
  • Learn in small, provocative and highly interactive classes;
  • Develop proficiency in assessing and analyzing scientific problems and issues; and
  • Cultivate skills and confidence in communication with scientists and non-scientists.

Upon completing the program, students will have developed a full appreciation of what science means to both global and local communities. The Marylhurst objective is to instill in students a dedication to sustaining a diverse and healthy life on earth through the application of sound and responsible science.

Career Paths

Environmental Science Careers

Graduates of the environmental science concentration degree program can expect to find career opportunities in environmental education and communication, natural resource management or environmental planning.

Careers in environmental education and communication include interpretive park naturalist, environmental writer, eco-tourism specialist, environmental advocate, environmental law, community affairs, public information and environmental education in elementary and secondary schools, colleges, museums and organizations.

Natural resource management occupations include soil conservation specialist, research ecologist, ecosystem restoration expert, park ranger and endangered species biologist. Graduates might find employment in fisheries, forest lands, wildlife refuge and land preservation management.

Environmental planning includes water, air quality, waste management, transportation, land use and urban growth management planning, as well as parks/recreation and wetlands/flood plain management.

General Science Careers

The general science concentration prepares students for a range of careers, from teaching science in public schools to science writing to management in organizations that require a broad understanding of science, such as engineering firms or public utilities.

This general science degree also can serve as a foundation for graduate study in one of many specialized scientific disciplines, including biotechnology or geophysics.
