August 4, 2008: The empty space where the pay phones are located in the library should be used as a cell phone area so visitors won't be carrying on their conversations when others are trying to concentrate. |
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Cell phone usage in the library is an ongoing problem. If an individual is talking on a cell phone and it is distracting you from your work, please notify a staff person and we will ask the person on the cell phone to hang up or take the call in the foyer. We have printed cards for visitors to hand to others if you feel comfortable with this approach. Cell phones and personal electronic devices should be set to "silent." During the first few weeks of each term, we will put up our "silence your cell phone" sign for all to see upon entering the library. |
April 11, 2007: Hi. Would you consider adding the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era to your research database? I'd sure appreciate it. Thank you. |
We checked in our consortium of libraries, and a few libraries in Summit subscribe to this periodical. Can you give us more detailed information on the need to subscribe to this title? In the meantime, we can get copies of articles from libraries which do subscribe through our interlibrary loan department. Table of contents are available on the journal website. | January 6, 2007: Since the writing lab moved in downstairs it has gotten much louder. Perhaps they could close the door. |
Since we moved the drop-in lab to the main floor of the library, we have designated the bottom floor of the library as a talking floor and a place for small groups to meet on the sofas or at the large tables.
If there is a problem with noise from the Writing and Math Center, ask them if they would be willing to close the door. Otherwise we recommend that you move to a carrel on the top floor of the library for complete quiet. |
| December 26, 2006: Please add additional reference books for the students in the M.Div. and MAAT departments. Find out what the main books are from Dr. Roussell. The worst example is that one is always looking for the one copy of the New Jerome Biblical Commentary. |
We actually have two copies of this book and we will put both in reference. Since books in this area are in such high demand, we will make every effort to get them back on the shelves in a timely way and encourage our patrons to do the same. |
| November 25, 2006: In the Mac lab it would be more efficient if the work you save in the "save folder" could be accessed from any computer instead of just the computer it was saved on. |
We have this capability now. You can save your work onto a central folder that is accessible from any Mac on the wireless network. Currently, this is a manual operation. If you wish to take advantage of this please talk to Ross Ludeman, our Mac Lab guru. Also, we are exploring ways to make this automatic and plan to implement it in the near future. |
| November 25, 2006: It would be nice if back issues of magazines could be checked out of the library. |
That would be nice! Unfortunately, back issues of journals are irreplaceable if they are not returned by our patrons. Journals are usually slender and easily lost or damaged. Plus there is nothing more frustrating to a library user than a missing issue of the exact journal they need to write a paper. We do have the ability to scan and send articles to our distance students if getting here to use our periodicals is a problem. |
| April 18, 2006: Why can't I renew a DVD even if nobody else has a hold on it? |
We are changing our policy to allow for one renewal of videos and DVDs. This will give you an additional week. You can call to renew or renew online from "My Library Account." You may also use the "Online Renewals" link from the library home page. |
| February 5, 2006: The route to the book renewal process needs to be much clearer. I don't want to have to read the entire page and then go through a logical process in order to begin the process. |
In response to your concern, we added the "Online Renewals" link to the library home page. Alternatively, you may select "My Library Account," located on the right side of this page and most library pages. Feel free to call or stop by the library for assistance. |
| December 1, 2005: The library should carry all textbooks required for all classes. |
Academic Libraries do not purchase textbooks because they go out of date quickly. Also, the cost would be prohibitive. For instance, in Spring Term there were 334 classes. If the average cost of a text is $60.00, it would cost $20,040.00 to buy one text for each class. Multiply this times 4 terms for a total of $80,160.00 for books that will be out of date in a year. One solution is to ask your instructor to put his/her personal copy on reserve at the library for student use. |
| November 13, 2005: Please turn down the heat. I have been in Shoen library the last couple of weekends and it is unbearably hot, especially upstairs. This does not seem to be a good use of resources. |
The lack of control of our heat is one of our and our patrons' biggest frustrations.
We are connected to a central boiler on campus and there is no thermostat in the building. Our wonderful maintenance department is very attentive to adjusting the valves and the amount of heat that comes into the building but because of the brick and the windows not opening, it takes days to cool down inside. Changes in outside temperature are a factor also. Be assured that an independent heating system is high on our wish list for future improvements. Until then, we will continue to make daily adjustments so our patrons are comfortable. Dress in layers! |
| November 4, 2005: Extend library hours at the beginning of the day and at the end. I would like to see the hours be 7:00 am to 11:00 pm. Especially for students who work mainstream hours, it is important to have the library available at the extremes of the day. |
We have slowly been adding more open hours in response to student feedback. Within the last year we added hours on the weekend days. We are always looking at ways to best serve our students and we will keep your suggestion in mind when we review our open hours. |
