Student OrganizationsStudents bring to campus a variety of interests. Everyone is encouraged to form and join organizations which promote common student interests and support the Marylhurst mission. Below is a list of established student organizations. Student OrganizationsAssociation for Supervision and Curriculum Development Student Chapter (ASCD)The Marylhurst University ASCD Student Chapter is designed to accelerate the professional growth of preservice educators and their self-identification as education professionals and leaders. ASCD is committed to improving teacher education and teacher quality. By meaningfully engaging student teachers with ASCD resources and involving them with members of the ASCD community, future educators and leaders gain an edge that energizes and raises their professional performance level. More information: Future Designers of MarylhurstThe Future Designers of Marylhurst is a group of Interior Design students who are aiming to further bridge the gap from student-life to professionalism by providing supplemental education, networking opportunities, and design-project experiences. Any student enrolled in an Interior Design studio course is automatically a member of this organization. More information: Labyrinth Alliance Balances You (LABY)LABY has among its purposes to raise awareness of the labyrinth as a tool for healing and well being; to build community through use of the labyrinth at Marylhurst University for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and administration as well as outreach to the greater community of the region; to encourage renewal, refreshment and reflection for everyone through labyrinth walks and events; to sponsor campus labyrinth events through the year; and to vision a permanent outdoor labyrinth on the Marylhurst University campus. More information: Marylhurst Gerontology AssociationThe purpose of the Marylhurst Gerontology Association (MGA) is to share and encourage a new paradigm for aging that recognizes the importance of understanding aging as a natural phenomenon that occurs throughout the life course. MGA supports visionary pilot programs promoting healthy ways of aging and professional advancement and learning including continuing education for gerontology professionals and those in related fields. While promoting cooperation with other gerontology professionals and student organizations, MGA sponsors or co-sponsors seminars, workshops and guest speakers. More information: Marylhurst L.G.B.T.Q. AllianceMarylhurst L.G.B.T.Q. Alliance's mission is to encourage diversity, inclusion, and dialogue in Marylhurst University and Oregon. It also seeks to help, support, and give voice to the L.G.B.T.Q. community present at Marylhurst University. More information: Marylhurst Music Therapy Student Organization (MMTSO)The purpose of MMTSO shall be to promote, foster, and advance the education and training of its members. We seek to promote the education, validity, and purpose of the music therapy profession; specifically including the goals and objectives of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). For information: Marylhurst Psychology AssociationThe mission and purpose of the Marylhurst Psychology Association (MPA) is to produce well-educated, ethical, and socially responsible members committed to contributing to the application and science of psychology and to society in general. MPAs goals are to encourage public education and awareness of psychological issues across the lifespan, to encourage collaboration between institutions offering psychology programs, to sponsor or co-sponsor seminars, workshops and guest speakers, and to support community outreach activities to promote mental health. More information: Marylhurst University Biblical Exegesis SocietyThe purpose of the Biblical Exegesis Society is to explore Scripture using the Historical Critical Method of Scriptural Analysis (HCM). It is open to students, alumni, faculty and staff. The Society will provide mentoring for those beginning the process of biblical exegesis. For those with more skill, it will offer the opportunity to be mentors and teachers as well as to pursue advanced studies with peer input and guidance. More information: Marylhurst University Net Impact ChapterThe mission of Marylhurst University's Net Impact Chapter is to inspire, educate, and equip individuals to use the power of business to create a more socially and environmentally sustainable world. More information: Marylhurst Writers' ClubThe Marylhurst Writers' Club invites writers of all genres to participate in weekly meetings and quarterly Open Mike events. The Writers' Club provides a venue for all Marylhurst students to receive constructive, friendly feedback on their creative endeavors. Meetings are run on a workshop model and authors are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their work for review. Open Mike events provide a forum for performers writers and musicians to practice public presentations of their creative works. All Marylhurst students are welcome to participate. More information: MU Omega Student OrganizationThe MU Omega student organization provides an on-campus association for and recognition of academically outstanding students in higher education, and is devoted to the advancement of scholarship. More information: SOLUTIONS: Marylhurst Mediation ResourcesThe mission of SOLUTIONS is to promote and advance skills in collaboration, conflict resolution, negotiation, advocacy and mediation and to network with individuals and organizations sharing similar objectives. More information: TrustworthiesTrustworthies is an organization where past and present students can come together and create a collaborative, supportive and inclusive trust culture environment. Trustworthies provides an environment for the members to develop their skills as they relate to building trust cultures in their professional and personal lives, and promotes functions that afford an opportunity to share this knowledge with the wider community. More information: Other OrganizationsMarylhurst Alumni AssociationThe Marylhurst Alumni Association endeavors to create opportunities for extending and deepening the intellectual, social and professional relationships among those who have graduated from Marylhurst University and current students. The Marylhurst University Alumni Board oversees the activities of the Alumni Association. Students are invited to participate in all alumni activities. More information: Marylhurst University Student Leadership CouncilThe council invites all students to be an integral part of the Marylhurst University Student Leadership Council by participating in the council meetings. More Information: Marylhurst University Sustainability Advisory Council (MUSAC)The mission of MUSAC is in support of the Universitys mission to "aid students in advancing their goals for responsible participation in a rapidly changing world"; and to foster University-wide responsibility towards earth stewardship and building sustainable community. MUSAC seeks to encourage, advise and support University-wide implementation of sustainable operational practices; act as a liaison among community stakeholders including the University administration regarding sustainability concerns and recommendations; gather, maintain and distribute educational resources on sustainability "best practices" for the University community; engage the Marylhurst academic community in dialogue around, and encourage integration of, sustainability concepts within the curriculum; work to establish the University as a model of sustainable practices. Students are invited to join MUSAC. More information: Marylhurst Sweep Rowing ClubAll students, staff and faculty are invited to join the Marylhurst Sweep Rowing Club. The club will meet on Friday mornings of spring 2011 term (beginning in April) for a learn-to-row class organized through Lake Oswego Community Rowing. Fee for the class is approximately $110 for the term. No previous experience needed. Experienced rowers are welcome too. The group meets from 7 - 9 am at the Lake Oswego Community boathouse, five minutes from the Marylhurst campus. Join a fun group activity and enjoy the beauty of the Willamette River as spring enlivens the river and river wildlife. More information: M ReviewWith guidance from a faculty advisor, students plan, manage and execute all aspects of this online literary journal. M Review is an annual publication of literary fiction, social and literary criticism, memoir, poetry and visual art by members of the Marylhurst community. Mu Omega Student Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor SocietyAlpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society is an honor society which partners with colleges and universities to celebrate the scholarship and leadership of adult students in higher education. Marylhurst University worked with Alpha Sigma Lambda to open Marylhurst's own chapter, Mu Omega. Eligibility to join is based on the very highest academic achievement and a demonstrable commitment to leadership and service. Each spring an invitation is sent to undergraduate students with a minimum of 36 Marylhurst credits and a GPA in the top 10 percent, typically 3.9 or higher. The week of graduation, an induction ceremony is held for the honor students. To foster an egalitarian celebration of all student accomplishments, Marylhurst does not offer cords or other visual distinctions for honors students at graduation. More information: Toastmasters InternationalToastmasters International provides the tools that enable people to develop public speaking skills. Toastmasters members learn by doing: speaking to groups in comfortable surroundings. People who can effectively communicate possess one of the skills necessary for successful living. The Toastmasters program has proven itself around the world. Globally, nearly three million people of all ages and occupations have participated in the program. More information: | |||||||
