Student Organizations

Students bring to campus a variety of interests. Everyone is encouraged to form and join associations which promote common student interests and support the Marylhurst mission. Below is a list of established student organizations.

Ad Sapientiam

The purpose of the Latin club, Ad Sapientiam (Toward Wisdom), is to teach and learn Latin as a group in order to better understand its elements and thus attain a wider perspective that enables the student to use Latin in everyday life.

Marylhurst Gerontology Association

The purpose of the Marylhurst Gerontology Association (MGA) is to share and encourage a new paradigm for aging that recognizes the importance of understanding aging as a natural phenomenon that occurs throughout the life course. MGA supports visionary pilot programs promoting healthy ways of aging and professional advancement and learning including continuing education for gerontology professionals and those in related fields. While promoting cooperation with other gerontology professionals and student organizations, MGA sponsors or co-sponsoring seminars, workshops and guest speakers.

Marylhurst Labyrinth Group

The Labyrinth Group has among its purposes to raise awareness of the labyrinth as a tool for healing and well being; to build community through use of the labyrinth at Marylhurst University for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and administration as well as outreach to the greater community of the region; to encourage renewal, refreshment and reflection for everyone through labyrinth walks and events; to sponsor campus labyrinth events through the year; and to vision a permanent outdoor labyrinth on the Marylhurst University campus.

Marylhurst Music Therapy Student Organization

The purpose of MMTSO shall be to promote, foster, and advance the education and training of its members. We seek to promote the education, validity, and purpose of the music therapy profession; specifically including the goals and objectives of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA).

The Marylhurst Players

Marylhurst's drama club is the Marylhurst Players. The purpose of the club is to offer Marylhurst students and the surrounding community opportunities for enrichment through the dramatic arts; to provide students with an outlet for their enthusiasm and creative impulse for the dramatic arts; to further interest and appreciation of drama through outreach performance; and to produce a dramatic performance once every academic year. Faculty advisor is Perrin Kerns.

Marylhurst S.A.F.E. Community

The Marylhurst S.A.F.E. Community (Sexual Acceptance For Everyone) aims to promote a positive and inclusive atmosphere for all people, and to bridge the gap between the straight and the LGBTQA community – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Allies. In the spirit of Catholic Social Teaching, Marylhurst University works to foster acceptance of all members of the Marylhurst community.

Marylhurst Writers' Club

The Marylhurst Writers' Club invites writers of all genres to participate in weekly meetings and quarterly Open Mike events. The Writers' Club provides a venue for all Marylhurst students to receive constructive, friendly feedback on their creative endeavors.

Monday meetings are run on a workshop model and authors are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their work for review. Open Mike events provide a forum for performers – writers and musicians – to practice public presentations of their creative works. All Marylhurst students are welcome to participate.

Friends of Shoen Library

The Friends of Shoen Library is a volunteer group of individuals interested in supporting Shoen Library's programs and services.

Kappa Gamma Pi

Kappa Gamma Pi is a National Catholic College Graduate Honor Society for graduates who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership during their college years. The Portland (Ore.) Chapter of Kappa Gamma Pi welcomes all area members to quarterly meetings on the third Saturday of the month. The year's program includes presentations and discussions of vital issues, a group-oriented community service activity and support of a missionary project.

M Review

With guidance from a faculty advisor, students plan, manage and execute all aspects of this online literary journal. M Review is an annual publication of literary fiction, social and literary criticism, memoir, poetry and visual art by members of the Marylhurst community.

MU Omega

Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society is an honor society which partners with colleges and universities to celebrate the scholarship and leadership of adult students in higher education. Marylhurst University worked with Alpha Sigma Lambda to open Marylhurst's own chapter, MU Omega. Eligibility to join is based on the very highest academic achievement and a demonstrable commitment to leadership and service.

Each spring an invitation is sent to students with a minimum of 36 Marylhurst credits and a GPA in the top 10 percent, typically 3.9 or higher. The week of graduation, an induction ceremony is held for the honor students. To foster an egalitarian celebration of all student accomplishments, Marylhurst does not offer cords or other visual distinctions for honors students at graduation.

President's Student Advisory Council

A group of students advises the University President about topics of vital interest to the Marylhurst student body. Representatives from each academic department meet three times a year with the President and other University administrators to share information and concerns. Marylhurst students can participate in the process by contacting their department's student representative.

Toastmasters International

Toastmasters International provides the tools that enable people to develop public speaking skills. Toastmasters members learn by doing: speaking to groups in comfortable surroundings. People who can effectively communicate possess one of the skills necessary for successful living. The Toastmasters program has proven itself around the world. Globally, nearly three million people of all ages and occupations have participated in the program.

Alumni Association

The Marylhurst Alumni Association endeavors to create opportunities for extending and deepening the intellectual, social and professional relationships among those who have graduated from Marylhurst University and current students. The Marylhurst University Alumni Board oversees the activities of the Alumni Association. Students are invited to participate in all alumni activities.
