Custom Design Your Bachelor’s Curriculum: B.A. or B.A.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies at Marylhurst
To earn your B.A. or B.A.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies degree from Marylhurst, you’ll map out a comprehensive plan of study with department faculty, and take most of your courses from across the university curriculum. You’ll also complete a senior project that deepens your learning in your area of study.

Interdisciplinary Studies Degree Requirements: What You Will Study
To earn your bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies from Marylhurst, you will complete 180-quarter credits (through a combination of courses and by transferring in credits). The degree requirements feature three main areas:
Major requirements (60 credits)
- Core – take two courses (Intro to Interdisciplinary Studies and Interdisciplinary Inquiry) that prepare you to complete your Senior Paper.
- Self-designed concentration – Once you complete the core courses, you will finalize your degree plan with your academic adviser and faculty mentor by combining one-to-three academic areas to meet your career plans. For example, combine coursework from psychology, communication, and culture and media.
- Senior paper
The final element of your degree completion is the senior paper. This is your comprehensive, in-depth analysis showcasing your study (highlighting an issue or challenge) across multiple academic disciplines.
Marylhurst Core (44 credits)
Fundamental coursework focused on the applied liberal arts such as communication skills, critical thinking, writing, problem-solving and leadership.
General electives (76 credits)
Choose courses from Marylhurst’s diverse undergraduate programs to better define your career focus. Most Marylhurst incoming students transfer in credit from their previous college work or through our Prior Learning Assessment program.
Art Therapy Prep Track
Interested in pursuing a career as an Art Therapist? Marylhurst offers a master’s program in Art Therapy Counseling. As an Interdisciplinary Studies student pursuing a bachelor’s degree, you can take a select group of courses in psychology and art to prepare for admissions into the master’s program.

Transfer in Your Previous College Credit
Most of Marylhurst’s incoming students transfer in college credit from either community colleges or another four-year institution. The average credits transferred is about 45-to-50 credits and many students enter the university with the majority of their MU Core or General Electives requirements completed.
Students with vocational credits may apply them towards the B.A.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies degree.
The average time to complete the bachelor’s in interdisciplinary studies program is three years. Marylhurst is a degree completion institution meaning most of our students enter our university with some previous college credit, reducing the investment of time and financial resources necessary to earn their degree.
