Marylhurst alum Michael Sorensen ’97 was recently appointed executive director for Maitri Compassionate Care, an AIDS hospice and residential care facility in San Francisco.
Maitri Compassionate Care selected Michael Sorensen, MPA, as its new executive director after conducting a nationwide search led by board member Jill Stockwell. In this role, Sorensen develops collaborative relationships with industry and government partners, oversees financial management including innovative fund development strategies, cultivates relationships with donors, foundations and corporations, supervises department heads, and collaborates with the board on strategic plan implementation.
Sorensen most recently served as executive director of health centers at the National University of National Medicine in Portland. He oversaw the business and community affairs of NUNM’s 20 academic health centers, which offer integrative primary care and classical Chinese medicine.
During his career, Sorensen has provided a range of services to many organizations, including serving as director of development & communications at the Cascade AIDS Project and helping the Coalition of Community Health Clinics expand healthcare safety-net services. He has raised more than $20 million in the last decade for the Native American Rehabilitation Association, Native American Youth and Family Center, and most recently for Cascade AIDS Project, among others.
“We are delighted to welcome Michael Sorensen to Maitri,” Stockwell said. “His background in health services and fundraising will ensure a seamless transition. We look forward to working with him to carry out the organization’s strategic vision.”
Michael Sorensen earned his B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies at Marylhurst University in 1997.
