Marylhurst M.B.A. alum Roe Polczynski ’09 co-authored Changing Your Equation, a book designed to help individuals reimagine and achieve their life goals.
“There is no reason any person should live without hope,” Roe Polczynski said. She and her husband, Don, found that after 35 years of working in management and leadership, they were still struggling to meet their life’s goals. Their “a-ha moment” was simply this: Alter our goals, or alter ourselves.
Through the Polcynskis’ reimagining their own future, they applied insights they’ve learned along the way, from numerous mentors, coaches and consultants. They’ve collected these tools and tidbits of sound advice into their first book, Changing Your Equation, designed to help:
- determine what you really want to accomplish;
- find others who can help you get to where you want to go;
- identify those who are holding you back; and
- learn new skills that will help you achieve your dreams.
Each chapter provides worksheets, illustrations and tools designed to help the reader increase awareness of life factors in his/her individual circumstance, how it affects attaining life goals, and actions to “change the equation.”
“For Don and myself, we realized unless the factors changed, our life would always lead to the same result,” Roe said. “There was a cap to our earning potential. There was a time limit on our future. As much as we want to, we can’t live forever! From there, I realized that our lives were an equation,” she said.
The Polcynskis identified universal principles (they call them “factors”) necessary to achieving life goals. Placed within one’s own “equation,” these factors become actionable steps.
“Changing your Equation not only creates awareness of many issues, it creates actions needed to implement real change,” Roe said.
Roe Polcynski earned her M.B.A. from Marylhurst University in 2009. She and her husband own a consulting firm, RD Advisory Group, LLC, based in Clinton, New York.
