Marylhurst MBA alum Simon Tam ’13 received the 2017 Citizen’s Award from the Chinese American Citizens Alliance Portland Lodge in February.
“His work in the community truly exemplifies the mission of the Portland Lodge,” said Helen Ying, CACA national vice president. Simon Tam is an award-winning musician, author, entrepreneur and social justice activist.
Simon’s award was part of the festivities at the CACA 96th annual Chinese New Year Banquet on February 5, 2017. President Kent Lee welcomed honored guests and nonprofit partners in the community.
For over 100 years, the Chinese American Citizens Alliance sought to better the welfare of the community and to achieve equality and justice for Chinese Americans and to encourage American patriotism. Members, men and women of Chinese heritage, work together with friends to realize the Alliance’s actions in community improvement and youth development.
Simon Tam earned his Master in Business Administration from Marylhurst University in 2013. A legal case involving trademarking his band’s name, The Slants, was heard by the United States Supreme Court in January 2017; a decision is pending.
